More from the Great White North

This has been a very mild winter. Today is Feb 28, and the outside temp is a very comfortable 0 degrees C or 32 F. It is really tee-shirt weather, and most folks are in light sweaters, or shirt sleeves. This week we went to MacDonald Island, where the new community center is almost complete. It has 4 hockey rinks, 8 sheets of curling ice, an indoor Olympic size pool, diving pool, kiddie pool, wave pool, water slides, indoor fields for lacrosse and soccer, and a running track of almost 1/2 mile. There is also golf, softball fields (background) and soccer fields. It really is a great facility.

The boys all trying to look dapper. Look at the hippie in the middle trying to make it look like he has lost weight.

And why is he trying to look so slim? Why, it is because he made some down-right wonderful cinnamon buns. It was good to have some goodies from the kitchen, and we shared with a few folks. These had the works, including pecans and plump juicy raisins.

How about a little Mexican Food for dinner? One of the local grocery stores had some fresh green chiles last week, so we had to make chile rellenos. And there is no better way to top off the great main course than to have great beans and calabacitas (squash and onion melange) How good are they you ask? Well, we were still talking about them for the next 3 days. You are all invited over any time for the next batch.

The local coast guard fleet is ready for the river to break up in spring. Until then, they run up and down the rivers on snow machines (ski-doo) They are there to keep the locals from drowning when they break through the softening ice. For the winter there is also a hover craft running up and down the river as alternative transportation to one of the local Tar Sands sites.

to be continued...
